We’ve been going back and forth about the jacket design for DAMAGED GOODS, McMorrow No. 9, out in February. The good people at Down East Books have come up
with an intriguing concept—and a bit of a departure from other covers in the series. The cover is photograph-based vs. illustration. Some people say they prefer a more abstract jacket so they can visualize the world of the book through their imagination. Others think a good photo jacket can have a lot of impact, especially on a bookshelf of illustrations. We’re not quite ready to unveil the DAMAGED GOODS cover (still tinkering), but I wonder what readers think. I’ve had photo covers in the past, but mostly in Europe and Japan. Very interesting, the different ways a book can be packaged. Check out a few McMorrow covers from around the world on Facebook.

In PORT CITY SHAKEDOWN, the first Brandon Blake novel, Brandon gets a full dose of bad guys. A brawl in a funeral home introduces him to Joel Fuller, a sociopathic hustler. Fuller is fresh out of jail and determined to take Brandon out—after Fuller and his sidekick Kelvin shake him down.
Rocky isn’t a tough guy. He’s a skinny little kid with crooked glasses, and he shouldn’t be homeless in Portland, Maine. When McMorrow and Roxanne pluck him from under the stomping feet of a gang of street kids, Rocky latches onto McMorrow–and drags him into a world of murder, both old and new. Why is McMorrow protecting Rocky? The cops want to know. Why is Rocky on the run? McMorrow wants to know. Why does death follow in Rocky’s wake? Jack and Roxanne need to find out before they’re added to the list.
Well, that’s an interesting question! I definitely consider the cover and title in selecting a book. It’s not the best way, I know, to find a good read, but after all the reading I’ve done, I get a feel for a certain type of book. That being said, I like to create my own pictures in my mind with fiction. This is especially true with characters. So, since you’re asking, I vote for no picture.
