What they’re doing

Jack and Clair in the barn, Jack in the easy chair, Clair at the work bench. A rainy afternoon. Jack is reading the Times, C.J. Chivers reporting from Afghanistan.
“This guy is the best war reporter I’ve read in years,” Jack said.
“I’ve read him,” Clair said.
“Right in the thick of it,” Jack said. “Good writer. Puts you right there.”
“When you were there once, maybe not a good thing to go back,” Clair said.
He sorted through wrenches. Jack looked at him, saw that he’d slipped away, falling into his past.
Jack decided to let it go. He turned the page.
